How to motivate yourself!

I think most people want better for themselves and are inherently able to work hard and dream big, but in life…

This week’s post is short & sweet and is a fun way to reconnect with your significant other or spark a conversation.

While Valentine’s Day is a great way to show your loved one just how special they are to you, it’s all the other days in between that really make a relationship work!

The quiz is super easy to take and there are no wrong answers!  I thought I knew my husband pretty well, but I was surprised to learn his love language is the same as mine!  What an eye opener it was for me , now I have a better understanding of his needs and how I can make him feel appreciated and loved.

The 5 languages are the following;

  1.  Words of Affirmation, having the need to feel validated through words
  2. Acts of Service, or the need to feel supported through receiving help
  3. Receiving Gifts, to feel the most loved is to receive a gift
  4. Quality Time, undivided attention is really important
  5. Physical Touch, intimacy and affection is very important

So take a few minutes to discover your own love language, then have your partner do it, and share your results with each other!  Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!!

Creamy Sweet Potato & Turkey Chili

Looking for a quick and healthy meal to feed your family in the winter months??  Chili is one of those easy one pot meals that warms the soul and makes your house smell so cozy!  I had tried a few versions of sweet potato chili but when I saw this recipe and saw she used one of my favorite kitchen gadgets, the immersion blender to make it thick and creamy, I knew I needed to make this asap!  Check out other great recipes from this great food blog, Pinch of Yum.  I pretty much stuck to the recipe and used vegetable broth and I also added chopped yellow squash and zucchini when I added the turkey and beans back into the pot.  This is a recipe you will try and be so glad you did!  Kudos to Lindsay for sharing this yummy chili recipe with the world!  I will definitely be looking for more recipes on this site!

Pinch of Yum’s Rockin’ 5 Ingredient Sweet Potato Turkey Chili

serves: 5 servings

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 1½ lbs. ground turkey
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 3 sweet potatoes, chopped into small pieces (peeled)
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 cups water
  • 2-3 cups broth (start with 2)
  • 1 14-ounce can black beans
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne for spice (if you want more heat!)
  • Sea salt to taste (amount depends on your taco seasoning)
  1. Heat the oil over medium high heat in a heavy, deep pot. Add the onion, turkey, 1 tablespoon chili powder, and 1 tablespoon taco seasoning. Add water as needed to keep the turkey moist and moving around in the pan. When the turkey is browned and crumbled and the onions are soft, remove from the pan and set aside.
  2. Add the sweet potatoes to the same pot with the remaining spices and stir to combine. When the sweet potatoes have browned just slightly, add the garlic, water, and broth. Bring to a low boil and simmer for 10 minutes or so, until the sweet potatoes are very soft. Using an immersion blender, puree the mixture until it reaches your desired consistency (you can also transfer to a regular blender and puree that way).
  3. Add the browned turkey, black beans, and cayenne – stir to combine. (This is where I added chopped yellow squash, zucchini, but you can add any of your favorite veggies you have on hand)

The original recipe suggested topping ideas like avocado, sour cream, cheese, red onions, tortilla chips, and cilantro.

This side is a perfect pair with grilled chicken, ground turkey or beef, and avocado.  This dish is even better the next day or two.

Tip:  Keep fresh cilantro fresh for weeks in your fridge by cutting the stems a bit and putting them in a mason jar filled with water and a covering the herbs with a plastic bag.
