Wedding season is upon us and looking back the whole process of planning a wedding seems like a
complete blur to me, but at the time, it was so crazy and stressful! I was one of those brides that planned and was spearheading my vision. I kept running records of money spent, vendors used, and guest lists. Spreadsheets made me somehow feel in control! (Please message me if you would like to get copies of these spreadsheet forms to use for your big day!)
I wanted more than anything to have a big celebration on the beach and I wanted it to be bohemian in style, with a color palette inspired by the glowing sunset on the beach. I started my process like most of you lovely ladies out there…on Pinterest!
Pinterest is amazing but it is a slippery slope to an overwhelming amount of inspiration and DIY projects that are not for the faint at heart! I suggest to pin away and then edit so you are not distracted. For projects you do want to tackle, make itemized shopping lists and or boards that you can source what you need for when you are ready. I created a look book of inspiration photos, this was used to go over with my photographer, make-up artist, hair stylist, and rental company where I got my linens etc.
I also took an accordion file folder and separated it into sections to help me stay organized. Along the way, you will have lots of invoices, contracts, and receipts. You never know what you will return so keeping good records is key! This was so helpful to me, you have no idea!
I separated the file folder system with these tabs:
- Food & Beverage
- Things on Order
- Misc. & Supplies
- Hair & Makeup
Now that you have yourself organized it’s on to step 2! Planning starts with getting inspired, so dive in and discover what you fall in love with for your big day!
Boho weddings are all about effortless style and details that are totally personal! Here are some boho elements that will inspire you in your planning.
Let’s start with the cake…
The first cake is a new trend that I personally love, The layers and texture is so pretty and the simple garnish makes it look elegant and not a sloppy mess! The second cake is more refined but still has that natural beach look to it!
Now for the dress!
This dress and silhouette is dramatic yet simple. I love the lightweight fabric and the details. For a boho look, the fabric is important. Look for details to make your look unique or keep it very simple and add your details in the accessories!
When thinking of the food to serve…
Keep it fresh and simple! A beautiful display of nuts, dried fruits, exotic cheeses, and flat breads to greet your guests after the ceremony is so welcoming! I actually had a pre-ceremony drink and this type of display for my guests to enjoy pre-ceremony. Because my guests traveled, I wanted to ensure the fun started as soon as they got to the beach! Either way, make sure you have a pretty display. It’s all about presentation… simple foods that look gourmet!
The “Boho” Look…
Hair should be textured and if you are planning an outdoor ceremony, make sure the breeze won’t whip your hair around. You may want to tie some pieces back away from your face. Add a pretty clip or silk flower or a floral crown for a true bohemian look.
Wedding Make-up should be natural and your skin should glow. Whether you want a bronzed look or something fresh and gorgeous like this look, make sure you practice with your stylist before the wedding. Make sure you check it out in the same lighting as your big day and that you feel like yourself wearing it! If you don’t normally wear a lot of make-up you should keep your look subtle. Remember this day you should be celebrating and you want to feel like yourself!
Centerpieces…this is usually one of the biggest things to fret over in planning! If you want a boho look, there is a tendency to layer and to add texture to create an eclectic look. Adding fresh succulents, air plants, shells, driftwood, and mercury glass gives an amazing look against pretty linens! When in doubt, add candles! You can never have too many candles at a wedding reception!
When you can, shop local or from artisans. I splurged on items that I could hand down if I have a daughter and things that I would use again and remind me of one of the most special days in all my life! I found this handmade cotton print and silk clutch on Etsy. Having pretty items that are made just for you will make you feel extra special and make wonderful keepsakes!
Let’s not forget the first impression…the wedding invitation!
If you love Bohemian designer guru Justina Blakeney (btw she is a must follow on instagram), you will go wild for her new collection with Wedding Paper Divas to find the perfect wedding invitation! Make sure your invitation sets off the tone of your wedding. In other words, do not pick a super formal invitation if you are having a backyard casual wedding. You may also want to carry your color scheme into the design. This collection is full of spectacular botanicals and exotic prints to entice your guests and get them excited to celebrate.
Here are some amazing bohemian accessories to give you a one-of-a-kind look…
A few shots from my magical boho beach wedding…
My Mom made the shell bouquets which I have to say came out stunning and so unique! The flower girls stole the show, and I had them toss tissue paper butterflies that fluttered in the air passed me while I waited to walk down. It was the one thing that totally calmed my nerves and allowed me to be totally present in the moment and feel all the love there was that day! My Dad drove me in his pink pearl Porsche he restored which had always been a dream of mine to have at my wedding. A Filipino beach wedding wouldn’t be complete without the lechon (roasted pig). We gave our guests a true Filipino celebration! Our favors were small gold resin Buddhas that were meant to bring joy and luck to our guests.
Remember, that’s what it’s really all about! Have your wedding represent what gives you joy in life and you will be sure to have a meaningful celebration with all of your loved ones!
